The Meaning of High School

Have you ever seen â€Å"A Charlie Brown Christmas†? Come on †¦ I'm a Jew and I've seen it. If so, you're probably familiar with this scene. Charlie Brown (who is inexplicably inseparable from his last name) turns to his thumb-sucking friend Linus (who inexplicably has no last name) after being humiliated by his friends and fed up with a commercialized holiday, and yells: â€Å"Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?!† Linus, lowering his thumb and blanket, says: â€Å"Sure, Charlie Brown. I can tell you what Christmas is all about.† He walks to center stage, politely asks: â€Å"Lights, please?† A spotlight illuminates him, and he launches into a spiel about Jesus and Christian ideals before walking offstage and simply states: â€Å"That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.† Well, I ask you, isn't there anyone who knows what high school is all about? The way I see it, high school has two possible purposes: 1. As individuals, we really have no idea who we are. In high school we pretend to be like everyone else for four years so that at the end we can announce: â€Å"This is ridiculous,† and then emerge from the experience with only minor injuries and an inner knowledge of what we want to do with the rest of our life. We learn in the end that every little thing we stressed out about – every group we were excluded from, every bad hair day – was completely and utterly insignificant and we would have come out exactly the same if none of it had happened. 2. As individuals, we really have no idea who we are. High school is a time when we are particularly impressionable, and it therefore has the power to determine who we are or want to be. We are the little silver ball in the pinball machine of life that bounces around for four years, not realizing until afterward that every time we moved, everything we bounced off of helped determine where we would end up in life. Every littl e thing we stressed out about – every group we were excluded from, every bad hair day – was significant and responsible for determining who we were at the end of the experience. Disclaimer #1: Maybe you have some idea of who you are and who you want to be. I know I thought I did until a month ago, when I realized I had absolutely no idea. It's my nonprofessional opinion that if you're in high school and think you know exactly who you are, where you're going and why, you're probably delusional. It is plausible, sure, but I can't picture many 50-year-olds looking back at their senior yearbooks and thinking, Mentally and emotionally speaking, I haven't changed a bit! Disclaimer #2: Yes, I may be  reading way too deep into this. Maybe high school is just four years between puberty and college. Maybe it has no effect on us other than providing prom pictures that'll be fun to show our kids and giving us the vocabulary to sound slightly educated in adult conversations. Nonetheless, high school is a fascinating chunk of your life. A couple of days ago, my mom gave me a lecture about life (you know how they go). The only thing she said that actually stuck with me was something like, â€Å"Live it up now, because high school and college are the years when change happens. You change, things around you change, people change, places change. After you settle down, have a family, buy a house, it's no less fulfilling, but things don't really change.† It seems fitting that when we bid another school year adieu and our seniors speed off to college with their futures in mind, we take a second to remind ourselves that while we'd probably be hard-pressed to find an adult who wishes she could relive her high school days, it won't fly by any faster just because you want it to. No matter what you think high school is, how it affects you and whether or not it all matters in the long run, take a second every once in a while to stop and smell the textbooks.

Similarities Between Jainism And Buddhism - 927 Words

Jainism and Buddhism share some common ground and similarities in their beliefs and practices, and they also have features that make them unique and distinctively different from the other. Some of the central similarities of Jainism and Buddhism can be found in when and where their traditions originated, resemblances in their primary teachers, their religious goals, nonbelief in a creator, and their values of nonattachment and nonviolence. Some differences between Jainism and Buddhism are found in their karmic principles and the conception of the soul. There seems to be more parallels shared between Jainism and Buddhism than discrepancies. Jainism’s and Buddhism’s main teachers of the practices also share some similarities. Although the Jain teachings did not originate with him, Mahavira, known as The Great Hero, was the major teacher of the Jain path. Around the same time in the 5th century BCE, Siddhartha Gautama was teaching another path which would come to be known as Buddhism. These two teachers were each a prince of a Kshatriya clan and both renounced his position of wealth at around the same age: Mahavira was 30, and Siddhartha Gautama was 29. (Fisher, 2013, pp. 121, 137, 138) Both Jainism and Buddhism originated in India. Yet, unlike Hinduism, neither is based on the Vedas, and both were alternatives to the ritual-oriented Brahmanism of India. Country-of-Origin, Consumer Ethnocentrism and Consumer Animosity Country-of-origin Australia is the country which produces EKEN Power Bands and is considered to be its place or origin. The country is developed in the relation to sport, but it seems to be seasonal and the company wants to provide year cycle business. Australian customers are rather prejudiced to the innovation. Much influence is provided by mass media, but the credibility of their impact is rather doubtful. The Australian market is full of sceptical views, the media is a powerful weapon in persuading the minds of people. The negative effect from such news is obvious. Once the news reported that â€Å"A Wristband clai ming to boost strength, balance and flexibility has been exposed as a fake† (Mawby, N 2010), people have taken the same side. However, mass media offers minimum reasons and it is impossible to draw conclusions about the reasonableness of such statement (Dowling Weeks 2011). This is the main characteristic of the Australian market as the country of origin for EKEN Power Bands. Consumer Ethnocentrism It should be stated that much attention is paid to the consumer ethnocentrism, as this issue influences customers’ choice, and as a result, defines market segmentation.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Considering consumer ethnocentrism, it should be mentioned that a lot of different factors may be considered as both advantageous and disadvantageous for the country of origin (Parts 2007). Trying to struggle over the American consumer ethnocentrism, EKEN Pow er Bands has taken a good strategy. The brand uses famous sport stars to impact Americans. According to the customers’ priorities, Americans’ choice can be in favour of the products used by the celebrities. When famous sportsmen wear the products by EKEN, people are tend to notice it and buy the advertised items, to make sure that they have reached their idol at least in cloths elements. Such strategy is going to help EKEN Power Bands avoid consumer ethnocentric relation from the American consumers. Consumer Animosity Consumer animosity in the relation to a specific country is defined as â€Å"the remnants of antipathy related to previous or ongoing military, political or economic events† (Lwin, Stanaland Williams 2010, p. 249) and â€Å"affects the intension of buy products imported from that country† (Hoffmann, Mai Smirnova 2011, p. 236). There are three main reasons which may cause animosity, that is perceived threat, antithetical political attitudes , and negative personal experiences (Hoffmann, Mai Smirnova 2011). There is no consumer animosity of Americans in the relation to Australia what is good news for EKEN which should not worry about this problem. The main difference between consumer ethnocentrism and consumer animosity is that the first notion shows antipathy to all foreign products and their consideration of bad quality, and in case of the second notion, the antipathy is based on the negative attitude to the specific country and may not be connected with goods quality. Conclusion Recommendations In conclusion, it should be stated that Australian company EKEN Power Bands has chosen a good international strategy. Focusing on people who are either fond of sport or going in for sports on the professional basis, the company has chosen the USA as the target market with the advertising campaign directed at the encouraging people to but bands by means of using celebrities and sport stars, EKEN Power Bands is going to achiev e good success, if other international market factors are followed.
